Terminal development in Emmerich completed

Following the comprehensive infrastructure modernisation in the Port of Emmerich, on 11 May 2026 Contargo Rhein-Waal-Lippe officially accepted the recently installed container gantry crane. The investments were made by the port owner, Port Emmerich – Infrastruktur- und Immobiliengesellschaft mbH (PE). With this ceremony the development of the terminal, which took place over several years, is now complete for the time being.

In the last few years the Emmerich terminal, which is operated by Contargo Rhein-Waal-Lippe, has been extended by a total of 12,000 m2. The objective was comprehensive modernisation of the infrastructure, including crane runways and a new gantry crane. The new crane replaces outworn equipment, making handling more efficient and sustainable.

As a trimodal terminal, Contargo in Emmerich combines transport by waterway, rail and road, thus playing an important role in regional and interregional goods transport. The investment in crane runway and gantry crane was around 12 million euro, and the amount for port infrastructure measures as a whole was approximately 20 million euro. The development was supported by funding under the German Directive on Subsidising Terminal Infrastructure for Combined Transport.

However, the development of the location is not finally concluded with the symbolic handing over of the new container crane to Contargo Rhein-Waal-Lippe. An application was submitted in August 2022 for funding to replace the second container gantry crane, which has reached the end of its planned service life. Shortly before the event took place, a positive signal came from the federal funding authority. The aim now is to replace the second gantry crane in 2028, in order to further enhance the performance of the terminal in coming years.
