Contargo AG participates in the project Gateway Basel Nord

04.12.2015-  The three Swiss logistics and transport enterprises Contargo AG, SBB Cargo AG and Hupac AG have jointly submitted the application for funding support for the project Gateway Basel Nord to the Swiss Federal Office of Transport.

The planning company Gateway Basel Nord AG, founded in June 2015 by Contargo AG, SBB Cargo AG and Hupac AG, estimates costs of CHF 73 million for the road–rail terminal (bimodal transport) on the site of the former marshalling yard at Weil am Rhein.

The bimodal terminal is planned to start operating in 2019.

In a second phase, the Port of Switzerland plans to complement the terminal with a new port basin for trimodal handling (road–rail–barge) and this will be navigationally connected with the Rhine Port of Kleinhüningen. The future Port Basin 3 will enable the efficient integration of transport by inland barge.

The large-scale terminal will provide the efficient and effective handling potential, lacking in Switzerland until now, for dealing with the increasing flows of goods between Switzerland and the seaports, and will relieve the capacity bottlenecks in the Rhine Port of Kleinhüningen. The volumes of Swiss containers transported by barge and rail will be bundled at one location, and pre-carriage and on-carriage within Switzerland can be shifted off the roads and onto rail.
