Possible Prospect of Lifting the Rhine Closure around Midday
Preparations have commenced for removing the tank vessel "Synthese III" which had run aground: another tank vessel has arrived at the site of the incident in order to take on board part of the grounded vessel’s cargo. At present depth measurements are being carried out, to establish whether a pontoon is necessary for stabilisation during the salvaging, since at this point the river bed is irregular and is scattered with rocks.
During the pumping off of the cargo, it is planned to use 3 tugs to hold the "Synthese III" in position.
Provided the salvaging goes as planned, it is expected that it will be possible to open the Rhine to shipping again at about midday.
