Container barge transport: Do we sail or wait?

It has unfortunately been part of everyday business for a long time now, that container barges at the big terminals in Rotterdam and Antwerp are confronted with handling delays that fluctuate considerably. However, it seems that this phenomenon has reached new records in the past few weeks.

In the last two weeks, up to eleven of our barges from various areas have been held up by delays at the Rotterdam RWG Terminal alone, involving 1,700 containers. A good half of these are export containers, and because of the waiting time some of them will miss their intended seagoing ship. Containers in this situation can only be re-delivered once they have been re-booked onto another seagoing ship and a new delivery window (Cargo Opening Time) has been fixed. In the meantime, we have to continue to transport these containers on barges, or alternatively put them into temporary storage at one of our terminals until a new COT at the seaport is authorised.

Unfortunately, an improvement in the situation is not foreseeable. Consequently, we are once again obliged to inform you that we cannot always adhere to prearranged delivery and collection times.

We hope for your understanding and ask you to pass on this information to all responsible employees in your company. If you have questions or require further information, our personnel will be pleased to help you.
