Contargo is the Eco Captain

NYK Line awards its Environment Prize “Captain Eco Award 2015”
Mannheim, 1 March 2016 – The container hinterland logistics network Contargo received the “Captain Eco Award 2015” from NYK Line GmbH. The wooden figure, in the form of a globe wearing captain’s uniform, is awarded by the shipping company every year to service providers who, by their commitment, contribute to improving the eco balance within the NYK transport chain.
“The Captain Eco is the second award for our sustainability activities within twelve months. This shows us that we are on the right path with our concept of equilibrium between the three pillars of economy, ecology and social responsibility”, said Heinrich Kerstgens, Co-Managing Director of Contargo GmbH & Co. KG, at the award ceremony.
NYK’s decision in favour of Contargo was based on Contargo’s convincing sustainability concept, in which the theme of ecology is already anchored thanks to trimodal transport. “We particularly appreciate IMTIS, Contargo’s tariff calculation system, which we use for routing, calculation and determining the CO2 emissions of our transports”, said Thorsten Kröger, General Manager of NYK Line, Hamburg.
Contargo continuously trains its employees and sensitises them to sustainability topics. Every Contargo site has a contact person for sustainability. For the bundling and coordination of all activities there is a central Sustainable Solutions Department, which also encourages the implementation of ideas contributed by employees.
For instance, to get employees involved in environmental conservation Contargo has distributed a mousepad made of recycled paper and printed with eco tips. Electricity consumption is reduced by using LED lighting in buildings and recovering energy from cranes. Driver training courses and the use of hybrid reach stackers reduce fuel consumption.
