Closure of the Rhine between Oberwesel and St. Goar

Last night the Dutch tanker vessel "Synthese III", laden with sulphuric acid, went off course, left the navigation channel and ran aground on the so-called "Jungfrauengrund" near Oberwesel.

According to the Wasser- und Schifffahrtsamt Bingen, due to the tanker’s double-hull construction there is no danger of the acid leaking out, and no-one was injured in the accident.

At present, the shipping company and the Wasser- und Schifffahrtsamt are consulting on the best method of salvaging the ship, which was on its way from Ludwigshafen to Antwerp.

It is probable that a part of the load will have to be transferred to another vessel before the "Synthese II" can be towed away.

We will keep you informed on the progress of the salvage work.
